Saturday Snapshots #3 – Pet Caricatures

It often happens that a man is more humanely related to a cat or dog than to any human being.

-Henry David Thoreau

After I created my friend Laura’s Save the Date of her pets, one of her best friends approached me on doing her Christmas card. I was told by Laura that “I think you may have found a niche here.” So I agree to do her Christmas card.

Laura + Chris' Save the Date

She had 2 pugs – Edgar & Edith and 1 cat – Claude. I asked her to send me as many pictures she could showing me their facial features and personalities. I was excited to see how different the 2 pugs looked. Edgar was very much a plump little boy. He has boyish little facial features. Edith was a tiny little cutey with an underbite- and seemed very girly. Claude – well Claude has quite a belly ;)

So after just a few tweaks by the Mama here is the Christmas card I created for her and her perfect little, furry family!

I also made her poster prints of each pet so that she could hang them up in her office.

Flashback to Old Ads – Are things much different?

You hear about how politically incorrect ads were back in the day…. I don’t think things have changed that much…

-me

Just thought this would be a funny post and a reality check. These ads are so politically incorrect. But we do the same things today just a little bit more subliminally. Don’t worry America – I think we know what our “gender roles” are.

What man puts on a full suit and then gets back in bed for breakfast? How about since you are fully dressed, you go downstairs and eat at the table.

“Colour Slide Projector” – that is not the only thing projecting…

This ad is for a shoe shine polish – I only know that because I read the wording.

Well these make me laugh but also make me realize that we still send the same messages in our ads. I guess things haven’t changed that much.this is my life in design

Working on a new site!

Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.

- Aaron Siskind

Hello there readers…

I have been a very busy fishy working on my sister’s website. She is an amazing photographer but has had construction page up for a while now. So, we have been working hard to gather all the information needed for her site. In the meantime, I am building a “mini site” to launch while we build her “real site”.

Anywho – I will keep you all updated on when the “mini site” is launched and when the “real site” is launched.

Here is a sneak peak of the adorable tots she has photographed. Please keep her in mind for your photography needs. Her prices are very reasonable and she will work with you to build a package that fits any budget!

Featured Logo – BWAG

Imagination is more important than knowledge.

-Albert Einstein

Today I want to feature one of my favorite logo designs. An amazing woman came to me to create a logo for a business that promotes & educates women using firearms. She said that she wanted something fun and light-hearted that would get the point across.

She called the business BWAG, which stood for “B*tch With A Gun.” I knew this logo could go 1 of 2 ways:

1.) Scary and psychotic

2.) Fun and flirty

Luckily, I racked my brain on how to use typography to make this logo work. I created my own font. If you notice I made the lower bump of the “B” jut out farther so that there was less visual space between it and the “W”. The “G” is a girl with a wave in her hair as well as a bow. The “G” turns into the female symbol and she is holding a gun. The “G Girl” gives the logo the fun and flirty look she wanted.

I love this logo because it was a lot of work to get it to be what it is. I also love it because the “G Girl” can be used alone if needed. I always try to create an element within a logo that can be used seperately. It gives your business more variety and helps you build your brand. See just a few ways that the logo & the “G Girl” could be used.

Thanks for letting me show you one of my favorite logo designs! this is my life in design

The Alamance Chorale

Music should strike fire from the heart of man, and bring tears from the eyes of woman.”

-Ludwig van Beethoven

As I am sure you all have read in my short bio on the about us page and know that I am in a choir. I joined Alamance Chorale at the end of last summer and have really enjoyed it. One of the things I love most is that I have become their go-to Graphic Designer. I have done their website, all of the their flyers, and programs.

The Reveal of the “Laura Jane” Wedding Set

Love is just a word until someone comes along and gives it meaning.

As I mentioned before, my best friend Laura got married on Saturday. She was such an elegant and beautiful bride. I had not posted any of her Save the Dates, Wedding Set, or Wedding Program since I did not want to spoil anything for her and the guests. So now that the wedding is over here are the designs I did for her and her new husband, Chris. This is by far one of my most favorite designs I have done thus far….

Laura & Chris love their dogs. With some photographs, I was able to create illustrations of their adorable pets.

This is such a great idea for Save the Dates for any animal lover!

This is the “Laura Jane Wedding Set.” Her colors were teal & yellow.

She wanted a fun, laid back font and very simple wording.

I love this set because it really captured their wedding style.

Here is the digital layout of their Wedding Program.

Simple front & back with the flowers from the invitation.

Can’t wait to get the photos taken of the programs – they printed beautifully.

CONGRATULATIONS LAURA & CHRIS!

Thanks for letting me create one of the prettiest wedding sets EVER!

Saturday Snapshots #2

A picture is worth a thousand words….

In college we were asked to take 2 photographs that do not go together – and photoshop them into one image. Now, I know photoshop pretty well – but this was CRAZY to me. The inspiration behind this assignment was a website called Worth 1000. The photographs and photoshop images that you will find on this site are done by some amazing artists.

So here are some images from the site that I love. I love it because it is 2 things that I adore….FOOD & ANIMALS :)

Invitations & Centerpieces

I’d rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck.

~Emma Goldman

My best friend is getting married this weekend. She has been there for me since I was a freshman in high school. Luckily, she asked me to designer her Save The Dates, Wedding Invitation Set, and Wedding Program. I also helped her create her centerpieces with all of the awesome miss-matched items she bought. Her wedding will be so fun and eclectic…I will post all of my designs that I did for her after this weekend.

After helping the bride-to-be with her centerpieces, it made me want to share with you some awesome centerpieces that you can do! You don’t even need a florist – just go to your local farmers market and work with the awesome people that sell their flowers there. They usually will grow in bulk just for you!

So check out some centerpieces that would go great with a few invitation sets I designed…

Classic Modern Centerpiece goes well with the “Katherine Modern Wedding Set” in black & silver

These pretty in pink Tulip & Orchid centerpieces go well with the “Lillian Joyce Wedding Set” in Pink & Cream

I love this Simple Gerbera Daisy Centerpiece. It goes perfectly with the bright orange “Suzie Grace Wedding Set”

DIY Wedding Favor(ites)

Is marriage much ado about nothing – or something much to do about everything?

Wedding season is upon us…Save the Dates, Wedding invitations, Dresses, Flowers, Cakes….

I think for the bride the favors are one of the things that are deemed important. It’s usually something that they take on as their little project and pour their imagination into it. There are so many wedding favors that you can do yourself and do not need a designer to help you. So today, here are some wedding favors that I have come across that are fun and can be used for any wedding’s theme. And for those of you who don’t know me I LOVE THEMES!!!! You will find that most of these are food. Hey – I love food and if it s a give-a-way…even better!

So enjoy a few of my DIY Wedding Favor(ites)….

Cookie Cutters

This is such a fun idea. There are thousands of reasonably priced cookie cutters out there on the internet. Find one that fits your theme and attach a tag. You can put your favorite cookie recipe in the tag or a cute poem. Or even just a simple “thanks for being here for a our special day” type of note.

Baking Cup with Candy

This is a small baking cup filled with cute hard/ribbon candies.

You would wrap it with a candy bag and your choice of ribbon. Add a tag too if you like!

Easy, fun and yummy!

Burlap Candy Sack

Having a barn wedding or a laid back “green” wedding?

This is perfect. You would buy burlap, cut it down into squares and place your favorite candy.

Pull edges up and add a ribbon or even hemp ties to finish it off. CUTE!

Seeds in a Tin

I love this idea. There are several different ideas out there for seeds favors.

I love the idea of giving seeds to grow with a poem about “growing and love”.

Think about it, every time your guest sees the flowers bloomed from your seeds – they will remember your wedding day. GENIUS!

Elegant Candy Boxes

This is one of my favorites. You can find these plastic candy boxes everywhere (Michael’s, AC Moore, Party City)

Fill the boxes with vibrant goodies, take slippes of paper and wrap around one corner and adorn with a ribbon.

It’s simple, vibrant and very modern-elegant.

Personalized Candy Bars

This one is my #1 favorite. Go to a bulk supermarket and buy your favorite candy bars.

Remove the outer sleeve and measure it. Create your own sleeve to the same dimensions and then glue them to the bar.

Everyone loves candy bars…right?!

I will have more wedding themed blogs since it is that time of year!
